Default Somerhalder 'relates to 'Diaries' role'

Ian Somerhalder has revealed that he believes his character in The Vampire Diaries DVD Box set has a "really human aspect".

Somerhalder, who stars as Damon Salvatore in the drama, told Zap2It that he can relate to his character to some extent.

"Well, I mean, you have to preface that as not being a menacing, maniacal killer," he joked. "But yes, we have some things in common. He tends to have a lot of fun."

Somerhalder continued: "I think there's a really human aspect about him. That's that he misses his girl and misses his brother, and everything he's doing is to get both or one of them back. It's out of love, it's just a little misguided.

"I think the people who have ill intentions for righteous reasons - those are forces to be reckoned with. Those are pretty dangerous people."

Somerhalder also contemplated how Damon will react to the news that his first love Katherine may still be alive.

"I think he's going to drown his sorrows in booze and women for a little while and he'll figure it out eventually," he said.

The Vampire Diaries DVD Box set continues Thursdays at 8pm on The CW in the US and Tuesdays at 9pm on ITV2 in the UK.
